Summer Reading

St. Andrew’s Academy has an exciting, three-part summer reading program.  First, students in grades K-8 will choose an age-appropriate book and upon completion do a summarizing project.  This is followed by the 2nd Annual St. Andrew's Academy 600 Minute Summer Reading Challenge. Finally, St. Andrew’s will be participating in a free web-based program through Scholastic designed to challenge children to read for their school as they Read for the World Record!

1) Classroom Book Project

Students can choose any book for the required reading selection (we have provided a book list in the linked packet to assist you).  Upon completion of the book, students will be responsible for completing a project (see the linked packet for specific grade requirements).

2) 600 Minute Summer Reading Challenge

In correlation with the above project, we are challenging our students to voluntarily read every day for our 600 Minute Summer Reading Challenge.  Reading every day is vital to academic success.  The 600 Minute Summer Reading Challenge will keep students engaged throughout the summer in a fun and creative way. Use the reading log in the linked packet to document the fiction or nonfiction book, magazine article, or other reading material, along with how many minutes your child reads at each sitting.  The book your child selects for his/her classroom project can be included in the Challenge minutes. Younger students are encouraged to participate and may count minutes read with an adult. Students who complete the 600 Minute Reading Challenge and submit the reading log will receive a special t-shirt and certificate at our first awards ceremony of the 2010-2011 academic year.

3) Read for the World Record

This free web-based program unites students and schools to read in an attempt to set a new world record for summer reading. Students may voluntarily sign up for their school, choose books they want to read, and then log their reading minutes at the Summer Reading Challenge Headquarters.  Schools that log the most minutes will be published in the 2011 edition of the Scholastic Book of World Records!  Go to www.scholastic.com/summer to learn more, and get your child to read and join the Scholastic Summer Challenge.
