The Arts

Music

St. Andrew's Academy strives to provide the same richness and depth to the musical arts as it does to all other areas of learning. Thus, the Academy supports an arts program that incorporates music classes into the curriculum of all grades. The ECE students participate in weekly lessons during which they explore music from many angles. Classes involve singing, dancing, playing various rhythmic instruments and musical story-telling. By kindergarten, the Kodály method is incorporated with the use of solfeggio (do, re, mi).

By first grade, students are equipped with the basics of music: rhythm, melody, dynamics, overall sound.  During the school year, they begin learning about what music looks like on paper in preparation of entering the strings program. Middle School students choose which direction they would like to take for their music education. Some choose to stay with strings. Others join the middle school choir or the graded bell choirs.

Strings

Our students are challenged to develop their musical intelligence by studying a stringed instrument in grades 2-4. As stated above, Middle School students have the opportunity to continue their education in the combined fifth and sixth grade orchestra. Students choose to learn either the violin, viola or cello and are taught the fundamentals of music three times a week during the school day. All students are given extensive opportunity to perform on and off campus.

Education in music enriches the whole child and promotes a cultural awareness through aesthetic experience. The goal of the St. Andrew's strings program is to provide a nurturing environment in which students can explore the wonders of music, a vehicle for self-expression, discipline, concentration, team-building and positive self-image, and become lifelong participants in the fine arts.

Creative Arts

The arts are an essential part of education. Research demonstrates that art education is closely linked to academic achievement, self esteem, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity. The St. Andrew's Episcopal Academy art education program helps students explore and become aware of their imagination and strengthens their creativity. It also develops their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through this program, students come to understand the contributions of the arts and individual artists to cultures of the past and present.

During weekly classes, students discuss major works and styles of art and art history. Students learn about the elements and principles of design, and create artwork using a variety of art media. Specifically for grades kindergarten through 3, effort is made to correlate art lessons with the core academic curriculum.
