2010 Battle of the Books

St. Andrew's Episcopal Academy Middle School students got a test of their mettle at the 2010 Battle of the Books. In this fun and interactive event created to encourage reading, students were divided into teams of four or five to answer questions about five different novels on a pre-selected reading list. Questions were based on comprehension and required a thorough knowledge of each story’s setting, characters, and plot to answer. At the end of the competition, the team that answered the most questions correctly won first place. Grades 5 and 6 competed May 14, and grades 7 and 8 on May 18.

Art Exhibit Showcases Creativity

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy showcased its creativity at the 2010 St. Lucie County Fair. Each year, schools from all over the county design exhibits around the fair's theme. This year's theme, "Remembering the 1960s," provided a perfect framework for St. Andrew's students to display their artwork, and participation extended from kindergarten to 8th grade. St. Andrew's Academy maintains a dedication to the "whole child" and is committed to offering supporting classes in visual and performance arts.

Read Across St. Andrew's Day

On March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss, students at St. Andrew's participated in Read Across America Day, an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. The Academy hosted its own "Read Across St. Andrew's Day" in honor of the occasion. In the spirit of one of his most beloved books, The Cat in the Hat, students (and a few teachers) came to school attired in red, white and black, wore silly hats and t-shirts, or even dressed up as a favorite Dr. Seuss character. Younger grades paired up with older ones as the festively clad students engaged in buddy reading time, and grades prek-3 through four participated in Dr. Seuss-themed activities throughout the day.

2010 Valentine's Day Tea

On February 12, St. Andrew's continued the tradition of holding the Valentine's Day Tea. Each year, the tea gives students the opportunity to practice formal greetings and etiquette. Grandparents were invited and enjoyed watching their grandchildren introduce themselves to the head of school, dean, police chief, nurse and courthouse representative. The Valentine's Day Tea is always a favorite event for many St. Andrew's parents, and this year's was no exception. The day went smoothly and was a great success.

Winterfest 2009

Winterfest was a great success.  We would like to thank all of the great volunteers, the sponsors and the children who made it worthwhile.  We had an amazing show of support from our families and friends.  Students and friends spent the day playing games, jumping in the bounce houses, riding ponies, throwing snowballs, and testing their stomachs on the Orbitron.  It was a great day of fellowship and fun at St. Andrew's and the money raised during the event will help support our financial aid program.

We would also like to thank our sponsors who made the day possible.  The food and drinks were donated by Yianni's Greek Cafe, Coca-Cola, and Natalie's Orchid Island Juice Company.  The bounce houses were donated by Billy's Bounce House.  Cassidy's Ice gave us a discounted price on the snow and the balloons were all donated by Bev Smith Toyota.  Thank you to the parents and faculty who donated all the decorations and prizes for the games.  Thank you to Coach Erin, Coach Angela, Mr. Weisbrot and Mr. Peirce for volunteering to take a pie in the face.  Thanks to Father Deke for his colorful announcing and to all the volunteers who helped set up at 7:30 am and then stayed to clean up in the rain.  Thanks to Norreen Ramsey and Maria Starratt for taking some great photos during the event.

A special word of thanks goes to the Winterfest committee who has been working to pull this together for months.  They are Jenn Denny, Carrie Biggers, Renae Lloyd, Paul Desborough, Maria Torrico, Linda Lees, Lynn and Joe DeStephans and Sandy Steinruck.

Parade of Books Literacy Event

On Friday, October 30, St. Andrew's Academy held its first Parade of Books. Grades prekindergarten through three dressed up in homemade costumes as a favorite book character, while fourth grade students dressed as a character from the historical fiction novel they chose for their October book report. The students marched in and around the school carrying their corresponding book. After the parade, the creatively clad children gathered in the Parish Hall for storybook snacks and a special reading by Mr. Peirce.
